2016 is coming to an end so let’s take a look back at the albums that reigned supreme this year!
Frank Ocean – Blonde
Blonde took four years to release and it made a big splash in August. Ocean’s sophomore album debuted at number one upon release selling over 275,000, making it the third highest selling debut album of 2016.
Miranda Lambert – The Weight of These Wings
“The Weight of These Wings” debuted at number one on the Country charts back in November. It’s a 24-track album with plenty of sass, humor, and heartbreak. This is Lambert’s first album since her divorce from Blake Shelton and one of her best to date.
Rihanna – Anti
This album released in January and has sold over 519,000 units this year. “Anti” has landed Rihanna at the number 9 spot on the year end sales list for 2016, making it her first album to ever break the top 10.
Drake – Views
Drake’s “Views” album has sold over 1.5 million copies this year making “Views” the number one selling album released in 2016. This is Drake’s 5th time in the top 10. It even landed him a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
Beyonce – Lemonade
Beyonce’s “Lemonade” album dominated this year when it released back in April. It’s one of her most personal albums to date and earned her 9 Grammy nominations for “Lemonade” including Album, Song, and Record of the Year. Sure she was just shy of a couple thousand in sales but this was the most talked about album this year! We’re still trying to figure out who “Becky with the good hair” is!
These albums didn’t debut in 2016 but they all very worth mentioning.
Hamilton Original Cast Album
This musical is already setting records but when they released their album last year it didn’t do so well in the charts (it only got to number 110.) Jump to 2016 though and the album sold about 739k putting it at number 5 on the sales chart. This is the highest ranked Broadway cast album to date.
Adele – 25
Adele’s followup album to 21 released in November of 2015 and destroy the charts that year but her domination carried over to 2016 as well. 25 has the number one spot for best selling album of 2016 with over 1.6 million copies sold on top of the 7.4 million albums sold in 2015. No one in music history holds the number one spot for the year’s top selling album two years in a row.
