We welcome creative, innovative people to apply for a position with EyeOpener. Please read the job descriptions carefully. Applications must include the information listed for each position.

Social Media Curator

EyeOpener, an innovative Tribune Media syndicated morning show, is looking for a Social Media Curator who can monitor, predict and interpret trending topics for our two hour live morning show based in Dallas. In this new position you will use a variety of cutting edge tools to engage the online audience, participate in their conversations, and produce elements of the most interesting and popular stories for use in the morning. You will make decisions about show content based on what is happening each day in the online universe; work with show producers to make sure our broadcasts reflect those conversations; and create new content that encourages participation among our hosts and viewers.

You must be able to sift through the clutter of diverse social media to find the topics and stories that will be most interesting to our viewers and to drive strong engagement every day. You must also have the intuition and production sense of a television producer to translate the most compelling online conversations into vibrant material for a fast paced live morning show.

A familiarity with current social media tools and aggregation services is helpful, as well as video and graphic applications to produce new, attention-grabbing content. You must understand the role social media plays in entertaining and informing a very diverse audience, and understand that tastes and trends can turn on a dime.
You must be a self-starter and independent thinker. You must be able to curate all the material of the day and look ahead to what will be the hot talking points tomorrow. You must be able to produce interesting and compelling segments while keeping an eye on the conversations that are still developing. You should have an excellent understanding of pop culture, current trends and current headlines. Every day you must make good decisions and deliver results with no hand holding. If you don’t already spend a dangerous amount of time online, looking for great stories, trends or video, you will not succeed in this job. You must love working with a diverse and offbeat staff who like putting square pegs in round holes.

Candidates must know a good story and a hot topic when they see it. You must be able to work under tight deadlines during off-peak hours, including overnights. You’ll need to be detail oriented, tech savvy and have an appreciation for the often strange things that go viral. Good writing skills are helpful, but the ability to put together good talking points is just as important. Candidates must understand and appreciate the demands of a live show and feed the beast every day.
Experience working on live newscasts is desirable. But candidates should also be familiar with producing entertaining web content, either for a commercial site or for your own websites, pages or blogs.

This is not your standard newsroom position. It is an unusual job in a unique environment.

We value solid newsroom & digital technology experience, but you must also be smart, clever, creative and have an edgy sense of humor. You have to be able to find the same kinds of things you enjoy clicking on. Lots of it. Every day.
We need your resume and an interesting letter telling us about yourself. We need to know what you have done in the past and for whom. If there are links to sites, pages or blogs, we want them. You should also include data on increases in readership or quantitative results. Applications that don’t include these things will not be considered. Period. We love people who want to do new things and take chances. BUT, if you haven’t worked in a television or web environment before, this is not the place to start.

Managing Editor

EyeOpener, an innovative Tribune Media syndicated morning show, is looking for a Managing Editor who can oversee planning and execution of multiple projects for our two hour live morning show based in Dallas.

You will develop, screen and manage a wide variety of offbeat segments for an unusual daily broadcast. These are not your typical news stories. They focus on trends, food, fashion, family issues and quirks of everyday life. You’ll work with a team of creative multi-media journalists, on-air contributors and producers. You’ll also have to make fast decisions about developing trends and make instant bookings for local stories, in-studio segments or satellite and Skype interviews.

You won’t be combing AP wires for story ideas. You’ll monitor social media and all the most-watched trend sites to make sure each show is a conversation about what is happening today and tomorrow… not yesterday. We look forward, not back.

You must be a self-starter and independent thinker. While everybody else has an early morning schedule, you’ll work a conventional workday, to make sure the next morning’s show has everything it needs. You need to be able to make good decisions and deliver results with no hand holding. You should also be a good script writer and editor, and able to make tough decisions. You need to understand the very different demands of live broadcasts and multiple websites, and feed the beast every day.

Senior Producer

EyeOpener, an innovative Tribune Media syndicated morning show, looking for a creative Senior Producer ready to re-imagine talk, trends and entertainment.  Are you ready to do something different?

We need a person who can lead and inspire a creative team of producers and editors to shape an entirely different kind of syndicated morning show. We produce three hours of interesting, fun and creative content with a heavy emphasis on social media involvement. We format news differently and everything we do comes with edge and attitude. Our team is talented, but needs a strong voice to help make tough decisions every day, make sure the tone and format of the show is consistently imaginative and enjoyable, and always make sure our product is as credible as it is creative. This is no small task and it will be different than any job you ever held or thought you might look for. You must be able to work with producers to analyze social media and online metrics and find the best ongoing conversations for the broadcast. Working with our digital team, you will also have a voice in our presence online and in social media. The product must be edgy, unconventional and give morning viewers a reason to stop what they’re doing and get involved with the show. The most important things you can bring this position are creativity, courage and a determination to do something very different, without apologizing for it. As a manager, you must also review scripts and video, handle schedules, control expenses and maintain good relationships with our affiliate stations.

This is not a typical newscast. You must have a real interest and appreciation for hot topics, trends in music and pop culture and a keen interest in the things people are talking about online every day. If your dream is producing a network nightly newscast or wildlife documentaries, this is not the job for you. Our show is “Wow”, not “Oh no”.

This is a permanent overnight position. You must be a self-starter and independent thinker. You must be able to handle demanding deadlines, manage people well, work with other departments and solve problems you might not have faced before. You must love working with a diverse and offbeat staff who like putting square pegs in round holes.

Responsibilities:

Candidates must know more than news. Comfort with trends, pop culture and social media’s effect on what we talk about are critical. You must know how to manage people well, while keeping the workplace productive and still fun. You will work with a variety of proprietary Tribune newsroom tools, so knowledge of newsroom computer systems, graphic systems and 21stcentury editing systems is mandatory. You must be detail oriented, tech savvy and able to make fast changes when the situation demands it. You will inspire others, foster trust and believe that thinking differently is the most important part of the job. Candidates must understand and appreciate the demands of a live show and popular websites and feed the beast every day.
